SERVPRO Offers Emergency Restoration Tips for Petaluma Homeowners!

10/1/2021 (Permalink)

You'll want to act quickly if an emergency strikes. Incorrect action, on the other hand, may cause more harm than good. In a disaster, properties should be thoroughly inspected by an expert to assess and repair the damage. Here are some helpful tips from your local SERVPRO!

Water Damage Do's

  • Remove as much excess water as possible with a mop.
  • Remove lamps and tabletop objects and clear off water.
  • Take out all the upholstery cushions so that they can dry evenly.
  • Place aluminum foil, saucers, or wood blocks between the wet carpeting and the furniture legs.
  • Allow air to circulate by opening doors, windows, closets, drawers, and cupboards.
  • Remove any valuable books and documents and place them in the freezer to prevent mildew growth until the drying process can begin.
  • Stay away from rooms with sagging ceiling caused by water.
  • If the damage occurs during the cooler months, keep the heat on; if its summertime, turn on the air conditioning if possible.

Water Damage Don'ts

  • No wet fabrics should be left in place. As soon as possible, dry them. Furs and leather goods should be dried with heat.
  • Do not leave damp carpets or floors with books, magazines, or other colored materials.
  • Do not use your vacuum cleaner to remove water from your home.
  • Do not use TV's or electrical appliances when standing on damp carpets or floors.
  • Do not turn on light fixtures if the ceiling is wet.

Fire Damage Do's

  • Use a light coating of petroleum jelly to clean and protect chrome trim on taps and kitchen appliances.
  • Before carrying out normal activities, blow off or brush-vacuum loose particles from furniture, curtains, and carpets.
  • Allow for airflow by opening windows.
  • If the power is turned off, empty the freezer and refrigerator and prop them open with a rolled newspaper.
  • Turn off any electronics, especially computers, in and around the affected area.

Fire Damage Don'ts

  • Wipe or attempt to wipe absorbent surfaces such as walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • If possible, avoid using upholstered furniture.
  • After a fire, food in open packages in cupboards should not be consumed; most food and canned goods should be discarded.
  • Dry clean smoked garments until the facility has been fully deodorized.

Sewage and Flood Damage Do's

  • Throw away any food, cosmetics, medicine, medical supplies, toys, mattresses, pillows, upholstered couches, chairs, carpet padding, or cardboard that came into contact with sewage or floodwater.
  • Assume any item that encountered sewage is polluted and should be discarded.
  • Keep pets and children away from contaminated zones.
  • Within the first 48 hours, clean and dry any damp surfaces or furniture to prevent mold growth.

Sewage and Flood Damage Don'ts

  • Avoid using sprays or treatments to remove contaminated zones because they can cause more harm than good.
  • To avoid future mold growth, do not install soft flooring coverings in locations where there is a known moisture issue (such as bathrooms with leaks).

Movie Night at SOMO Village

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

Do you have Halloween plans? If not, why not go to a free drive-in Halloween-themed movie at the SOMO Village parking lot sponsored by the City of Rohnert Park Community Services Department? All of the children will receive a treat bag including candy and a Halloween-themed craft to do in the car while waiting for the movie to start.

This event is sponsored by Measure M-Parks for All which was passed by the voters in 2018.

Since the city had to cancel its annual Halloween Carnival due to the COVID-19 restriction on large gatherings, they wanted to provide a fun, safe and family-friendly event that everyone could enjoy on Halloween weekend whether trick or treating is in their plans.

The movie, ParaNorman will be featured October 30 and the movie Casper will be held October 31. ParaNorman is a story about a boy who must use his ability to see and speak with the dead to save his town from an old curse.

The SOMO Village parking lot will open at 6 p.m. and the movies will begin at dark. Reservations are required by calling 707-588-3456 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or visit www.recity.org/halloween to reserve a space online.

There will be portable restrooms and hand washing stations available on site, but we are encouraging people to use the restroom before arriving for the movie.

Windsor's Happy Halloween Day! Nov. 09, 2019

11/8/2019 (Permalink)

Setting is a front porch. A woman wearing a mask holding a basket of candy for a little girl in a red costume. Happy Halloween Sonoma County!

The Kincade fires may have ruined Halloween Day for the evacuees in the Sonoma County area. But these spirits are unbroken. Check out the holiday event named, “Halloween Take 2!” Brought to you by the residents of Windsor, CA. Take your family and friends to enjoy a night full of tricks and treating around the streets of downtown. If there is a porch light lit, then the residents are open to trick or treaters. Some of us at SERVPRO of Petaluma/Rohnert Park will be out there tomorrow evening with our children to have them enjoy the holiday that was taken from them due to the recent fire. Thank you to all local, statewide, and out of state fire departments for protecting us by containing the fire.

Be safe and Happy Halloween!

Thank You to Our First Responders!

10/29/2019 (Permalink)

This is an extremely stressful time. Once again, we are experiencing the horror of a massive fire. The Kincade fire began its destruction five days ago and has expanded to 75,000 acres of land. We are fortunate and thankful to the Firefighters and other first responder teams who have been working tirelessly to contain the fire and keep us from harms way. Their efforts have prevented fatalities as of this moment. Preparation has also come with a cost however I live in Marin County and the majority of us have had our power shut off for four days now without any notification as to when the power may turn on. PG&E is working to restore the power by monitoring the wind patterns to see if we may be at risk by faulty power lines. Without power our food storage was the first thing to go. Ice was scarce and many people that relied on refrigeration have had to eat out. Businesses outside of Marin have been busy with people, locals and evacuees from Geyserville and Windsor. Businesses have also had to shut down due to the lack of power leaving those without work as well.

We are being kept in the dark and we can only hope that this fire is extinguished as soon and safely as possible. When this happens, we will need to restore and rebuild what we lost. If you need assistance during that process of getting back into everyday life, then contact a professional here at SERVPRO of Rohnert Park/Cotati and we will be glad to help. Until then, take care, be safe, and avoid be well.

Test your escape plan often

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

  • Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year, making the drill as realistic as possible.
  • Make arrangements in your plan for anyone in your home who has a disability.
  • Allow children to master fire escape planning and practice before holding a fire drill at night when they are sleeping. The objective is to practice, not to frighten, so telling children there will be a drill before they go to bed can be as effective as a surprise drill.
  • It's important to determine during the drill whether children and others can readily waken to the sound of the smoke alarm. If they fail to awaken, make sure that someone is assigned to wake them up as part of the drill and in a real emergency situation.
  • If your home has two floors, every family member (including children) must be able to escape from the second floor rooms. Escape ladders can be placed in or near windows to provide an additional escape route. Review the manufacturer's instructions carefully so you'll be able to use a safety ladder in an emergency. Practice setting up the ladder from a first floor window to make sure you can do it correctly and quickly. Children should only practice with a grown-up, and only from a first-story window. Store the ladder near the window, in an easily accessible location. You don't want to have to search for it during a fire.
  • Always choose the escape route that is safest – the one with the least amount of smoke and heat – but be prepared to escape under toxic smoke if necessary. When you do your fire drill, everyone in the family should practice getting low and going under the smoke to your exit.
  • Closing doors on your way out slows the spread of fire, giving you more time to safely escape.
  • In some cases, smoke or fire may prevent you from exiting your home or apartment building. To prepare for an emergency like this, practice "sealing yourself in for safety" as part of your home fire escape plan. Close all doors between you and the fire. Use duct tape or towels to seal the door cracks and cover air vents to keep smoke from coming in. If possible, open your windows at the top and bottom so fresh air can get in. Call the fire department to report your exact location. Wave a flashlight or light-colored cloth at the window to let the fire department know where you are located.

How You Can Help People Affected by the North Bay Fire

10/12/2017 (Permalink)

Our prime purpose in life is to help others. - Dalai Lama

While dozens of fire crews go from house to house to save lives, killer wildfires continue to menace North Bay California with 26 dead and hundreds missing. The 21 fires currently burning across the northern part of the state have also destroyed more than 3,500 buildings and torched more than 191,000 acres — a collective area nearly the size of New York City. These wildfires collectively are the deadliest in California’s modern history.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS:

  • If there is a wildfire in the area, be ready to evacuate on short notice.
  • If you see a wildfire and haven't received evacuation orders yet, call 9-1-1. Don't assume that someone else has already called.
  • If ordered to evacuate during a wildfire, do it immediately- make sure and tell someone where you are going and when you have arrived.
  • If you or someone you are with has been burned, call 9-1-1 or seek help immediately; cool and cover burns to reduce chance of further injury or infection.

HOW TO HELP RIGHT NOW:

• Santa Rosa has currently met its immediate requirement for volunteers, but they ask that people interested in volunteering or donating as-needed sign up with the Red Cross. The Red Cross has a sign-in sheet here. For Sonoma County, you may call 707-573-3399 if you're hoping to volunteer.

• The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership has also been called in to help. If you wish to donate or volunteer, you can register on their website.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ... “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something.

Help People by Donating to Hurricane Irma

With over 180 mph gust of winds and the longest cyclone around the globe, Hurricane Irma caused many lives, destroyed homes, government buildings, and businesses.   As the rain continues, many people are in danger with flooding across the Southeast U.S. The amount of people injured and dead is still unknown, as death toll rises. The estimate overall cost of property damages and lost businesses may well rise up to hundreds of billions of dollars.
